What Is Eczema?
Eczema is characterized by dry, red, itchy, and inflamed skin. The condition
is not contagious and the cause of eczema is not clearly known, but there seems
to be relationships to genetics, allergies, and a weak immune system. Normally,
an eczema outbreak starts off with an itchy patch of skin that turns into a red
rash of bumps and blisters. It is most common in young children and babies and
often appears on the face, arms and legs; however, some develop eczema as adults
and on other parts of the body as well.
Cases vary from mild eczema that can be remedied with home treatments to severe
eczema that does not go away and can be so uncomfortable that medical treatment
must be sought. Allergens, dry and cold climates, sweat, irritating fabrics and
skin care products, dry skin, and stress are all factors that could cause an
eczema outbreak.
