Melanoma and Endometriosis Connected

March 21st, 2008 by admin

In a 2007 study from the French Institute Gustave Roussy it was reported that women with the disease endometriosis have a 60% greater chance of developing melanoma. There is also a greater likelihood that women who sunburn easily and have many moles and freckles to get endometriosis too.

Six percent of women suffer from endometriosis, which is marked by tissue growth outside of the uterus. If not treated properly it can cause infertility. The cause is not known, but researchers believe that both endometriosis and some types of melanoma are genetically linked, which may explain the connection between the two as well.

Another Super Food for Skin Fitness: The Acai Berry

March 19th, 2008 by admin

Like the goji berry, the acai berry is a super food and an excellent part of your skin fitness regimen. The acai berry is so loaded with antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and amino acids that your skin will be protected from the environment, maintain its moisture better, and keep its elasticity longer, among other things.

The acai berry–which is dark in color and about the size of a grape–grows on a palm tree in the Brazilian rain forest. Most commonly the fruit is used in sodas and juices, though, a handful of the berries can be tasty too as long as you’re careful to avoid the pit. According to Oprah Magazine, its said that the acai berry tastes like a blend of berries and chocolate.

Because the acai berry has twice as many antioxidants as a blueberry, the acai berry may keep your skin a bit more fit than the tiny blue berry more commonly found in the states. Antixoxidants help fight off free radicals in the environment, and if your skin is protected, then your skin’s elasticity will remain in shape preventing fine lines, sagging, and age spots.

Additionally, the acai berry has proven beneficial for the body’s cardiovascular and digestive systems. Even more promising is that a recent University of Florida study found that the acai berry will aid in treating some types of cancer because of the fruit’s phenolic antioxidants. In the study the researchers used extracts of the fruit and noticed the self-destruction of leukemia cells was triggered in 86 percent of the cells tested.
