How to cover dark spots

November 21st, 2008 by Sara

A special guest blog post from the author of Beautiful with Brains.

If you have dark spots, you need to use corrective makeup to cover them. These cosmetics offer twice the coverage of a traditional foundation and give a natural look. Brands like Dermablend and Cover FX specialize in this type of makeup and professional makeup artists swear by them. Some traditional makeup brands offer product to cover skin flaws as well. For example, Avene Couvrance Compact Foundation Creme SPF 30 and Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer are designed to cover all imperfections.

But before applying your cosmetics, you should prepare your skin. Wash your face, then apply a moisturizer and let it sink in for a few minutes. Many corrective cosmetics can be drying so it is very important to hydrate your skin before applying them. In addition, a moisturizer will make your makeup go on more smoothly. Then apply primer to create a base for the makeup to adhere to.

Now it is time to hide those dark spot. To do that, you need either a concealer or a foundation that is one or two shades lighter than your skin tone. Choose a yellow-toned product and apply it over the dark spots.

The next step is foundation. A corrective foundation would be the best option but you can use any product that offers maximum coverage with a natural finish. Choose a yellow or peach toned one that is the exact shade of your skin tone or you’ll end up looking like you’re wearing a mask. Be careful not to apply too much though. These foundations are formulated to cover everything, so it may look cakey if you go overboard. Apply it with a brush or a sponge instead of your fingers. This will provide a lighter and more natural coverage.

Now, set everything with a translucent loose powder. It will make your makeup last longer.

And who doesn’t like long-lasting makeup?

Thursday skin facts — MSM and melasma

November 20th, 2008 by Sara

If you are taking an MSM supplement to help get rid of your melasma, then here are a few skin facts you need to know:

1. If you take MSM with a vitamin C supplement, your body will absorb the minerals better.

2. Some say MSM helped to completely eliminate their dark spots. Some also say that after they stopped taking MSM their melasma returned.

3. MSM is essentially sulfur, so don’t expect these pills taste good.

4. Start by taking a small dosage every day and work your way up. Expect some stomach discomfort at first, but if anything persists definitely stop taking MSM and talk to your doctor.
