Allergies to Alpha-Hydroxy Acids

January 1st, 2008

It has been said that over 200 skin care products contain alpha-hydroxy acids that are meant to eliminate or lessen wrinkles, shrink pores, and even out hyper-pigmentation of the skin. Because of its common use many women and men have found that they are allergic to the acids, which include glycolic, lactic, tartaric and citric acids.

According to the FDA, if you experience any of the following symptoms after using a product containing an alpha-hydroxy acid, it is likely you have an allergy.

* Redness
* Swelling
* Burning
* Blisters
* Bleeding
* Rash
* Itching
* Changes in skin color

If it’s possible to obtain a sample of a product before purchasing, do so. Testing a small amount of the product on an area of your skin that is not visible to all is a great way to make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.
