Contest: Wear sun block or die

You already know that flip flops may kill you if you’re not careful, but did you also know that flip flops might also save you from great pain and fashion nonsense?

In light of all this, Skin Fitness Facts is launching its first contest that YOU can enter and win in one very easy step. Here are the details…

What You Win: FlexFlops—the emergency flip flop—and a summer’s supply of DDF Daily Organic SPF 15.

When You Win It: The last day to enter the contest is August 1. The winner will be announced on August 1.

How You Win It: Write about your most creative sun protection technique. This can be done by either commenting on this post or by writing about it on your site and linking back to www.skinfitnessfacts.com/news using the link text: flip flops will kill you.

Criteria: The winner will be chosen based on three criteria: 1) Does the sun protection technique actually work? 2) Did your story make the judge (me) laugh, or at least smile? 3) Did the entry include the word “melanocytes”?

    I try to stay indoors during the daylight hours, only emerging for trips to the store when supplies run low.

    I wear a big purple hat to protect the melanocytes on my nose.

    I wear a layer of spf 70 then a layer of oil just so I can have a nice glow and still pretend I am going to have a nice tan.

    I first get a spray tan, so it looks like I’ve been in the sun. Once I have my nice fake golden tan I use my face lotion with SPF 30 multiple times a day and when I go outside I wear large sunglasses (they cover about half my face). When I really want to protect the Melanocytes on my nose I pair my sunglasses with my awesome camouflaged visor.

    My favorite sunscreen protection technique (besides slathering on high SPF sunscreen) is to bring a sarong to the beach. I can use the lightweight sarong to cover my body as I lay on the beach or cover my shoulders and chest as I walk.

    Well, up until now, I have done a fabulous job of structuring my life so that I can stay indoors during the peak daylight hours during which the hideous Florida sun vies to burn my skin to crisp. The college and graduate school years have been particularly flexible for that purpose - take classes at 7:30am! Take classes at 6pm! Get a job doing data entry from home!

    Then it was time to trade that life in for a cubicle. Cubicles don’t have windows. Very convenient for my anti-sun purposes.

    Beyond that, I always slather on the sunscreen, wear pants or long skirts year round (in Florida), rock the hat collection, only buy cosmetics with sunscreen in them, and never forget to reapply.

    My reasons for being anti-sun? Well, first I would have to give a big thanks to my parents for both having had skin cancer and scaring me to bits. Then I have to admit I like the pale look. My melanocytes cooperate and I compete for the palest skin with Northerners who stay huddled up indoors most of the year for entirely different reasons.

    Have any of you had an actual vitamin D test. The real one? I’ll bet you’re all deficient.

    And I’ll just add that if you are deficient, your skin has never worked the way it’s supposed to and it never will.

    I follow a regimen of sun-safety all year round. Given that my melnocytes will secrete protective melanin in response to the time spent in sunlight or under tanning lamps, I begin my regimen slowly, exposing my skin for longer periods of time but very very gradually to allow the melanin to build up in response to UVB rays. During the year I switch to a tanning bed equipped with a tanning lamp emitting less UVB and more UVA. That allows me to darken the existing melanin with far less risk of UVB burn. I know that I am getting about 12,000-18,000 international units of Vitamin D with each session and that is great for feeling great.

    When I do venture out to the mid-day sun, accompanied by my mad dog and friendly Englishman, I recognize that the beds gave me a natural SPF of no more than 4-6 but that SPF does not sweat or wash off. But I still do not stay out for hours and hours that would be dumb.

    My fear is burning, that’s dangerous. The Italians and the French have taught us that a daily glass or two of red wine is beneficial to our health, doctors now agree with that. Just as true though (not the past Prime Minister of Canada!), is that if you drink 6 or 7 BOTTLES of that exact same red wine, your health could be severely harmed.

    Let me leave you with this original phrase that I have used for many years…
    “Think sunlight is bad? Try living without it!” And I follow that up with “Moderation in all things!”
