Impetigo Is Not Just for Children

March 5th, 2008

The skin condition impetigo is getting some attention lately because of celebrity Amy Winehouse’s announcement that she has the condition. Impetigo is not that common among adults and most often seen in children.

Impetigo is a bacterial infection that enters the skin from another abrasion like a cut or a scabbed over mosquito bite. The condition is often noticable because small blisters appear on the face and form in clusters that eventually fill with pus and crust over. Impetigo can be treated with skin products like antibacterial soaps and ointments, but seeing a doctor is important so that the condition doesn’t get worse. An antibiotic may need to be prescribed especially if your lymph nodes become increasingly swollen, you are weak, feverish, or have diharrea. Serious cases of impetigo can lead to kidney problems and hospitalization, yet that is even rarer yet.

Impetigo is contagious so if you have it, be sure to not touch others. Change your bedding frequently, loosely cover the blisters with bandages, and keep the skin clean and medicated.
