Skin enemy number one: Carbohydrates

October 21st, 2008

Most of us are well aware that carbohydrates do a number on our mid-section, but few of us know what those same carbs are doing a number to our skin too.

By eating too many refined carbohydrates (candy, desserts, white breads, etc.) the amount of sugar in our system increases, which not only turns to fat but also increases cortisol levels in our body. Cortisol can impact hormone levels and promote inflammation of the cells.

In other words, the junk food turned toxins and hormones are looking for a way out of our bodies, which it does on our skin. Acne, dull skin, and discoloration can all be a consequence of a diet too rich in carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates also increase insulin levels in our bodies. With too much insulin in our system collagen can be impacted. With weakened collagen fine lines and wrinkles are soon to follow.

The solution is to eat a balanced diet that is made up of complex carbohydrates (fruits and whole wheat), lean proteins (chicken and tofu), vegetables, and healthy fats (avocado and nuts).
