The facts about lasers and melasma

April 5th, 2008

Fact One: A laser with a wavelength of 532nm is directed at the skin. The energy causes the melanin in the skin to break apart into smaller particles. These particles are absorbed by the body.

Fact Two: Treatments are best done in a series, but you will notice improvement after the first session.

Fact Three: An experienced esthetician is qualified to treat melasma with a laser.

Fact Four: It can be painful. A numbing cream is applied before treatment to prevent discomfort.

Fact Five: Swelling and redness is likely.

Fact Six: You should avoid direct sunlight on the skin. Sun damage will cause the melasma to return.

Fact Seven: Infection can occur. Follow instructions to clean and use antibiotic ointment after each treatment.
