Many of us melasma sufferers are scared of hydroquinone – and for good reason.
Hydroquinone is a harsh chemical that works well in reducing the appearance of melasma, but at what cost? Yes, I want to reduce my melasma, but I also want to be kind to my body.
And this is why I’d like to recommend arbutin as a skin fit alternative to hydroquinone. (This recommendation will be one in a series of recommended skin lighteners, so stay tuned for more skin fit suggestions.)
Although arbutin does not stop melanin dead in its tracks, it does work to lighten dark spots including melasma and other hyperpigmentation. Very few skin lightening products offer 100% melasma removal, at least not in my experience, so any gentle and effective skin lightening product like arbutin is worth a try.
Here are the skin facts on arbutin:
- It is a skin lightener that slows down melanin production
- Arbutin is derived from a variety of berries (including cranberries, mulberries, and blueberry shrubs) and pears
- There are few side effects. In fact, arbutin can help reduce skin redness and irritation too.

Are you looking to improve your melasma with skin lightening products and skin fitness? Try incorporating healthy berries into your diet and try a skin care product like Dr Michelle Copeland’s Pigment Formula, which contains arbutin and other skin lightening ingredients.

Sure you burn calories and release endorphins with sex, but did you also know that you improve your skin’s fitness with sex?
Oxytocin, which is released during orgasm, is a hormone and a neurotransmitter within the brain. Oxytocin has many great benefits:
- Promotes sleep
- Relaxes you and decreases anxiety, stress
- Encourages feelings of trust and love
Now it might be a stretch, but let’s think about this in terms of skin fitness. With enough sleep and low stress don’t you think your skin would look better?
Skin tip – The more nooky you have, the more rested and relaxed you will look. How’s that for taking a few years off your skin.

Would you or have you tried any of these interesting beauty treatments?
#1 Oil pulling – This is the process of swishing cold pressed oil in your mouth to pull toxins from your body. According to TruthinAging.com the oil pulling method is ancient and good for your health. Oil pulling even helps treat different skin ailments.
#2 Chap stick for chapped cheeks - I’m not even convinced that chap stick is good for our lips and now they’re telling me to put it on my face? Scary! Australia’s BeautyEditor.com recommends a non-medicated, non-menthol variety of chap stick as pre-makeup base.
#3 Suction for your pores - Yes, you heard me right…suck your pores clean. The Isolaz is a photopneumatic suction instrument that essentially sucks your pores clean. Pores are cleared for about a month and then you’re back to normal again. This is a new treatment special for acne sufferers and is only used in select doctor’s offices right now, but ask your esthetician, maybe she’ll know where to send you.
