The run down on dry skin

March 13th, 2009 by Sara

Dry skin, itchy skin, winter skin, the whole deal. It’s no fun. Here is the run down on how to change dry, scaly, flaky skin into soft, supple, and shiny skin.

Dry Skin Tip #1 – Take short showers.

Dry Skin Tip #2 – Always wash using luke warm water.

Dry Skin Tip #3 – Don’t use any soaps with alcohol or fragrances, not ever.

Dry Skin Tip #4 – A sugar scrub is an excellent way to exfoliate away dry skin. Sugar scrubs are moisturizing too.

Skin Fitness Facts recommends Whish Pomegranate Three Whishes Sugar Scrub. Note: only exfoliate once or twice a week.

Dry Skin Tip #5 – Don’t shave with soap. Shave with a moisturizing shave lotion (remember, no alcohol or fragrances).

Dry Skin Tip #6 – Pat yourself dry after washing and apply moisturizer right away. By applying lotion while there is still some moisture on your skin, you’ll optimize hydration.

Dry Skin Tip #7 – Dry winter air and cold air-conditioned air is very drying. In the winter, wear stockings or long john’s beneath your clothes to protect your skin. In the summer, keep your thermostat turned up a few degrees.

Dry Skin Tip #8 – Nutrition. Nutrition. Nutrition. Vitamin A and Essential Fatty Acids will help you maintain moisturized skin. Eat nuts, fish, and vegetables like carrots and spinach, and say “no” to dry skin.

Dry Skin Tip #9 – Oh yeah, one more thing: Drink more water!!!!

Spa treatments that make your skin look worse

March 10th, 2009 by Sara

A facial, chemical peel, or microdermabrasion do not necessarily lead to even-toned, acne-free skin. Sometimes these treatments can have the reverse affect you are looking for.

Think of it this way — you may be cleansing your pores and stripping your skin of dead skin cells, but your bringing the bacteria and oils from deep in your skin to the surface. You’re also applying chemicals and other solutions that may aggravate your skin in some ways causing redness and inflammation. Often after receiving a spa treatment you’ll notice redness, peeling, and even an acne breakout.

So you’re probably asking … what’s the point of spending the money and the time on these spa treatments if it’s only going to make my skin worse?

Because of the long-term results of these treatments. Most estheticians and dermatologists recommend you get a series of treatments for optimum results. With repeated treatments your skin becomes accustomed (in a sense) to the treatment, and the end result is much more pronounced.

That’s not to say that every spa treatment is for every skin type. That’s just plain false.

For example, if you have melasma or acne, then microdermabrasion is an awful way to treat your skin. However, the right chemical peel could work wonders.

Take your skin fitness in your own hands. Research your skin conditions online, find an esthetician you trust, and always ask a lot of questions before you pay for any spa treatment.

If the results after receiving the spa treatment are not what you hoped for, tell your esthetician. She (or he) may be able to modify your skin care regiment for optimum skin fitness.
