Five skin fitness benefits to exercise

February 12th, 2009 by Sara

Oh, where to begin with the benefits of exercise. It strengthens your heart, builds muscle, burns calories, levels out your mood, leads to better sex and sleep, and here’s one you don’t hear very often: exercise is good for your SKIN FITNESS!

As if you needed any more reason to exercise, here are five more reasons to get off your butt and into the gym.

Sweat your skin clear
When you exercise you sweat, right? Well, the sweating process is your body’s way of cooling itself and a way to eject toxins and other built up fluids in your system. In other words, sweating is a bit like self cleaning.

Burn up that stress
With stress comes an increased production of testosterone-based hormones in the system. Translated — with stress come acne break outs.

However, when you exercise you burn up some of those hormones and you encourage your adrenal glands to produce less of them.

Stretch out cellulite
When you practice yoga, spend time weight training, or incorporate other slow and controlled movements into your workout, you are literally stretching the fibers directly beneath the skin. Cellulite forms because fat is stuck between these tense fibers. If your muscles are strong and those fibers are stretched, fewer pockets of fat will form.

Circulate those nutrients
Doctors recommend 30 minutes of cardio activity at least three times a week. This will keep your heart pumping strong and your circulatory system in tip top shape. With this improved circulation, your skin will receive all the nutrients it deserves.

Additionally, cardio exercise rattles toxins free from the body.

Breath deep for more collagen
During exercise more oxygen is pushed into and through the body, which promotes cell growth and the production of collagen. Collagen deteriorates with age and the  harmful environmental elements, but with exercise you are doing your part to slow down that deterioration.

It’s important to know that you cannot spot train your skin. No particular exercise will make one area of you skin tighter, more supple, or a different color. But overall exercise does do wonders for your complexion and the youthfulness of your skin.

There’s no reason not to exercise for the sake of skin fitness.

Three questionable beauty treatments

February 2nd, 2009 by Sara

Would you or have you tried any of these interesting beauty treatments?

#1 Oil pulling – This is the process of swishing cold pressed oil in your mouth to pull toxins from your body. According to TruthinAging.com the oil pulling method is ancient and good for your health. Oil pulling even helps treat different skin ailments.

#2 Chap stick for chapped cheeks - I’m not even convinced that chap stick is good for our lips and now they’re telling me to put it on my face? Scary! Australia’s BeautyEditor.com recommends a non-medicated, non-menthol variety of chap stick as pre-makeup base.

#3 Suction for your pores - Yes, you heard me right…suck your pores clean. The Isolaz is a  photopneumatic suction instrument that essentially sucks your pores clean. Pores are cleared for about a month and then you’re back to normal again. This is a new treatment special for acne sufferers and is only used in select doctor’s offices right now, but ask your esthetician, maybe she’ll know where to send you.

The long forgotten wash cloth

January 1st, 2009 by Sara

With all the exfoliating scrubs, sponges, and loofahs out there it seems as though I have completely forgotten about the classic wash cloth. As a child it’s all we used. Well, that and a bar of soap.

Way back then it seemed to do the job just fine so why have I strayed so far away from the washcloth?

After realizing that I might have been neglecting a very inexpensive, very effective beauty tool I decided to dig a couple out of my closet and give it a shot.

What I found is that the washcloth cleans and smooths my elbows and knees better than anything else I have (I know because I tested only one elbow and only one knee).

The only downside to the washcloth is the fact that the soap doesn’t lather as nicely as it does with a mesh puff. Otherwise, I’ve been sold and have decided to revert back to my childish ways.

So to all you beauty buffs looking for the next new rage in health and beauty, go retro and use a washcloth.
